CALIFORNIANS SKI FREE AT EAGLE POINT

Story By Jill Adler

Next time you plan a ski roadtrip from Cali to Salt Lake, factor in a day at Eagle Point. The Southern Utah ski resort 3.5 hours from SLC is offering free skiing and boarding to any California resident for the entire 2012/2013 season. In addition, any guest can ski free every Thursday in January. “What we have learned overwhelmingly from our guests during the first two seasons since reopening is that we have a truly exceptional mountain that people love to visit,” explained Shane Gadbaw, CEO and Co‐Owner of the resort. “We have spent millions to make the property and the service first class from the newly renovated Canyonside Lodge down to the friendly greeters in the parking lots. Our last remaining challenge is to massively increase awareness in the core markets of Las Vegas, southern California and Utah so people know that we have this new boutique resort with thrilling terrain, super friendly staff, gorgeous views and long‐lasting powder stashes.” Plus, it’s a phenomenal place to learn to ski. There are miles of easy, rolling beginner terrain.

There are no strings attached to nab the deal other than providing a name and email address.

The idea for the campaign was modeled on the Las Vegas “Free Days” campaign. “We can give lift access away for free yet still achieve a sufficient yield from our guests on food and beverage sales, rentals, instruction, retail or condo stays,” said Gadbaw.

“More importantly, the free admission spurs the first‐time visit. That is all we need because the vast majority of new guests fall in love with the place and go home to tell their friends and family.”

Eagle Point’s tentative opening day is Dec. 23, 2012 but will go to weekends only from January 10 till close in April 2013. They will also operate on Martin Luther King Day (Monday, January 21) and Presidents’ Day (Monday, February 18). That leaves Monday through Wednesday to covet the ski area for your private party. “We had our first group rent the resort for two days last year and they loved it. This year we expect more private group rentals especially from the casino industry in Las Vegas,” said Gadbaw. The resort can host turnkey private events for large groups of up to 500 people including snow sports, lodging, fine dining, conference space and transportation.

Eagle Point Resort is located 18 miles east of Beaver, Utah and a scenic 3.5 hour drive from Las Vegas or Salt Lake City. The resort features 600 skiable acres, over 40 named runs, 1500 vertical feet, 5 lifts, 2 transport snow cats, lodging, dining and endless backcountry terrain. For more information or group reservations, contact Shane Gadbaw at 855‐EAGLEPT or visit www.eaglepointresort.com or Facebook/EaglePointResort.

Alta April Pass

Snowbird doesn’t own the spring pass market and Alta’s out to prove it. Not that I’m recommending buying either considering the slim conditions out there and the likelihood of never pulling out of the tailspin we’re in. And who am I to say for sure? We might get a Hail Mary and have the best spring on record….But I’m not holding my breath.

Still, if you have no other season pass, are desperate to make turns or love backcountry corn or already have more than 3 vacation days at Alta planned, then by all means, jump on this deal.

The “April Pass” provides access to all of Alta’s lifts from April 2 through the resort’s final closing weekend, April 29. Just note that the resort is open weekends only after April 15. The pass costs $199 and there are 20 ski days available so if you ski every day it winds up costing you about $10/day. Plus, if you are planning to ski at least three more days next month it makes sense. Not too shabby. However, IMHO, it would have been way cooler to offer $200 off next year’s pass if you buy by April 1, 2011, and then allow everyone to use their new 2012/13 pass until the end of this season. Just saying…

Buy the Pass online at alta.com for pickup on or after April 2 at the Alta Ski Area Ticket Office.

FYI- It’s $99 for children 12 and under.

Calling All SnowMamas…and SnowPapas

Ever since your kids learned to ski you’ve been all about building their lifelong memories through winter day trips and vacations. But a ski vacay ain’t the same as spending a week on Maui. It’s like you’re planning for a wedding. What to pack? Where to go? How to get kids to their ski/snowboard lessons on time? The questions are endless.

Usually you turn to friends who’ve been to the place you’re going; then the Web for resources, insight, best places to dine, cheapest ski rentals and more. You research the heck out of the place you plan to visit because you don’t want to waste a minute once you’re there. Or maybe you’re the one who always gets asked for advice.

Park City Mountain Resort figured out three years ago when they started their online Snowmama program that there was a community of snow parents itching to chat. It’s a page where real parents provide tips, tricks and deals that make planning winter vacations fun and easy(er). It’s the best of both worlds- friends and fellow moms connecting with an online community. “The biggest reason people apply (to be one of our Snowmamas) is that they’re passionate about skiing, snowboarding and kids. They want to share that passion with others. It’s amazing to see that connection take place,” said PCMR’s Krista Parry.

The Contest Is On

PCMR selects new bloggers each season, and the contest to choose this season’s crew starts today. Those chosen few will receive a free family winter vacation to Park City Mountain Resort, season passes, special perks plus a cash bonus. All for two blogs a month. They’re looking for people from around the country who are jazzed about family winter vacations and who want to share their experience and insider tips. Utah, New York, even London. Anyone can apply and everyone has a shot. The Resort’s Advisory Committee is selecting a few people from each of five regions. Last year, Parry says they received 1000 applications for 10 spots. You don’t need previous writing experience but you do need family and ski experience. In fact, one of last season’s Snowmamas submitted an eight-page email she had previously written to a friend who had asked what she should do on her family vacation to Park City.

If sharing is in your blood, you’re a good candidate. Of course, your personality has to show through. No one wants to read a boring blog. An advisory committee comprised of 175 of your peers decides who’s going to write the most entertaining, informative and personality driven tales. “It’s not a popularity contest or about who has the most followers,” said Parry. “It’s who are the right people for the job.”

The right parents also have to be able to meet deadlines. That’s where the cash bonus comes in. Get your stories in on time all season and you will be well compensated.

What It Takes To Apply

Show your personality by submitting 200 words or a 60-second video on why you want to be a Snowmama or Papa. You’ll also be asked to give a tip to a family planning a winter vacation to the slopes and discuss a favorite ski memory.

Entries must be submitted at http://bit.ly/Basapp by 11:59 pm MST on September 21, 2011.

If You Don’t Enter Or Don’t Win

Snowmamas and papas isn’t just about the online connection. Every Friday post New Year’s any parent can gather offline for the weekly PCMR Meetups. People from all over the country ski together for a few hours. “They didn’t expect to have friends to ski with but that’s what we’ve seen,” said Parry. “They go with their family on vacation, put their kids in ski school and have a couple hours to themselves. That’s where the meet ups come in. You can ski with someone who knows the mountain.”
