DEAR RIDER, a feature documentary from Red Bull Media House and Emmy-winning director Fernando Villena, is a celebration of the life and vision of Jake Burton Carpenter (1954-2019), the pioneer who propelled the sport of snowboarding into a global and cultural phenomenon. The film debuts TUESDAY, NOVEMBER  9 (9:00 – 10:30 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

The intimate and revealing documentary features interviews with Jake’s family, friends, and fellow snowboarders, including action sports icons Shaun White, Kelly Clark, and Mark McMorris, as well as a wealth of archival material and home movies. DEAR RIDER pays homage to Jake’s beloved and loyal “riders,” the audience he faithfully addressed every year for decades on the first page of his snowboard company’s catalogs. Acclaimed actor Woody Harrelson, a close friend of Jake’s, narrates catalog passages interspersed throughout the film.

BOLLE’s Short Film Celebrates Determination

Bolle lens and skier

It took more than 20 years for a Frenchman to win the FIS Alpine World Cup’s Big Globe but Alexis Pinturault conquered his demons; on his 30th birthday no less. Bolle’s short film – VISION: Alexis Pinturault’s Quest For Excellence follows the elite racer through training regimens, travel and equipment decisions as he brings viewers into his grueling world cup ski season that resulted in Pinturault capturing the ultimate top prize in a nail-biting finale to the 2020-21 ski season.

“The idea of creating a behind the scenes documentary is just one more way we’re trying to improve the overall customer experience by providing unmatched access to an athlete and what it takes to win at the highest level,” said Andrea Cappelletti, Global Sports Marketing Manager at Bollé.

The 17-minute documentary, is part of Bollé’s marketing push to connect with its audience as they introduce a new lens called Volt+. The high-contrast lens was developed using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to evaluate 20 million different color combinations before determining the perfect lens. The brand is also using Augmented Reality (AR) to allow customers to not only see what its helmets and sunglasses look like on your face, but to then look out through Bollé’s top of the line Phantom lens.

5Point Adventure Film Festival Goes Virtual

5point film festival

The 5Point Adventure Film Festival was born in 2007 to inspire adventure of all kinds, to connect generations through shared experience, to engage passion with a conscience, and to educate through film. Up until this year, they’ve been able to take their show on the road. Instead of bowing to COVID-19, 5Point has gone virtual.

Snowbiking in 5Point Adventure Film Festival

The non-profit centers its mission around “5 Points”: Purpose, Commitment, Respect, Humility, and Balance. By partnering with outdoors brands like Gregory, Yeti and Coalatree the show can hit the road to spread these points across the Rockies. The one held in Salt Lake City last November was a blast to attend and the selection of award-winning shorts kept audiences on the edge of their seat.  But, alas, the show couldn’t go on as usual.

5Point Adventure Film Festival Must Go On

5point programmer Julie Kennedy says, “We all can’t be together under one roof but be we can be together on our screens.” This year’s event kicked off on Earth Day, April 22, 2020, with the first of three, all new, 90-minute programs of films from their archives along with special guest vignettes showing “Life in Lockdown.” If you missed it like I did, you can watch it here:

The three-part fest continues tonight (Friday) at 7 p.m. MST over at 5pointfilm.org/events/unlocked/ so grab some popcorn and beer for your Friday night “in”.

The live event in Carbondale, Colo., has been postponed until October. Those who already purchased tickets for the April dates can either get a refund or roll over their tix to the fall. http://5pointfilm.org/festival/

Matchstick Ski Crashes: What Goes Up Must Come Down

Matchstick ski crashes

At the start of every winter, the top ski action filmmakers like Warren Miller and TGR bust out their latest homage to Ullr. Sponsored pro athletes travel the world in search of epic lines and bravado for the camera. What we audiences of enthusiastic recreational skiers don’t see is the pain and turbulence behind those lines.

For nearly every stuck landing are multiple fails that are never seen. Talented editors make those athletes look like superheroes of the slopes. Well, Matchstick Productions compiled this little reel of crashes, slams and tomahawks from their latest ski porn- Return to Send’er. They remind us that everyone’s human. These guys just have superhuman balls…and rubber limbs.

River Surfer Gannett Horn

River Surfing

River surfing is a thing. Really. I wasn’t much of an ocean surfer because of the obvious- hard to paddle out, sharks, reefs, and I don’t live near the sea. But that hasn’t stopped river runners like Gannet Horn from finding his wave.

River Surfer – an unassuming, simple, and community-oriented short doc produced by and promoted through ROAM- captures the heart of one man’s thrill of surfing whitewater. He’s not the only one, of course, as kayakers and standup paddlers have found new ways to play in the river. But you can get a taste of the “why” from watching this beautiful little short.

If you want to learn more about Gannett check out his interview here.
